Click exchanges, also known as start page exchanges, work in the following way. When using one of the click exchanges you view someone else's web site in your browser for a certain length of time (say 10 to 30 seconds). Each time you view someone else's site you earn one credit. As you earn credits someone else will visit your web site for the same period of time. With some you get one page view in return for every six credits (1:6),, with others one hit in return for two credits (1:2), and others still one for one (1:1).

And that's not all. If you refer other people to these click exchanges you will earn even more traffic from their efforts. So, for example for every six pages your referrals view you get 1 hit to your website, or a 1:10 or 1:20 ratio for example.
